American Legion Battlefields Post 144

for Veterans, their families, and their community, state, and Nation

O Lord, you have showed us that death is but the gateway to a more glorious life, and that we must not fear its coming; and we know, also, that neither life nor death can separate us from your love. Assure us yet again that our departed comrades are not lost to us, but sharing new life with you in the kingdom of our Father, where we shall in your good time be reunited. We know them to be with you forever. Amen

It is with deep sorrow that American Legion Battlefields Post #144 announces the passing of William Earl Elkins. Earl transferred to Post Everlasting Friday, January 29, 2010.

Earl was very active at Battlefields Post #144. Among other activities, he served as 2nd Vice Commander as well as the primary Bingo Caller for our bingo games on Monday mornings. Earl will be missed by the Legion for his contributions to the Legion as well as his help with other activities of the Post.

Mr. Elkins was born on December 9, 1947 and enlisted in the US Navy in Jacksonville, Florida in 1965. During his six years on active duty, he worked aboard various ships and shore commands in the Ship’s Serviceman rating. Following his discharge in 1971, Earl worked primarily in road surfacing. He and his wife, Judy, raised three sons and one daughter.

There will be a Memorial Service for Earl at the Post on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at 2:00 P.M., weather permitting.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
