The American Legion Boys State Program began in 1935 in the State of Illinois. The program was initiated by American Legion leaders to counteract efforts of Fascist governments in foreign countries to influence the political development of American youth. The American Legion Department of Virginia first sponsored a Boys State Program in 1939.
The American Legion continues to sponsor Boys State in the belief that young citizens who are familiar with the operation of our form of government will be better prepared to uphold its ideals. |

The name “Boys State” was selected by the first participants in Illinois in 1935. As the name implies, Boys State is organized to instruct its participants, or “citizens,” in the operation of government on the state and local levels.
The citizens of Boys State, numbering approximately 800, are divided into fourteen political subdivisions or cities. Each city selects its own governing officers as well as representatives to the Boys State Legislature.
