T JohnsonComrades,

Great things are happening at Post #144. We hope many of you have had an opportunity to visit our new Web site at at http://battlefieldspost144.net. In addition to an expanded full-color newsletter, you will find an ever-growing wealth of information about Post #144 and our many activities in the community.

We welcome your feedback and imput. If you do not have access to the Internet, please get your kids or grandkids to help  you find and explore our site.

Elections

At our meeting on May 5th, we will present our slate of officers for the 2009–2010 year. Elections will be held at our June 2nd meeting; come and participate! We’d love to see you. Meetings begin at 7:30 P.M.; we offer food and beverage beginning at 6:30 P.M.

Memorial Day Activities

On Memorial Day, we encourage you to visit the observance at the War Memorial beginning at 10:00 A.M. In the afternoon, we will participate in Sandston Post #242’s parade before we hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony for unserviceable Flags at our Post Home. If you have an old US flag you wish to retire, bring it with you. Later, we will picnic on hotdogs and hambergers in our Picnic Shelter.

Boys State & Girls State

During this past year, we sent five young men to Boys State and our Auxiliary has sponsored three young ladies to Girls State. We will send more this summer.

Legion Drill Team Competition

We were proud to sponsor the Highlang Springs High School Marine Corps JROTC team in the Regional American Legion Drill Team Competition. They took 2nd place in two of the four events. We plan to sponsor them again this coming year.

Shooting Sports Competition

We also sponsored the Highlang Springs High School Marine Corps JROTC in the American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Competition this spring.

Legion Baseball

We continue to sponsor community youth in an American Legion Baseball team.

Boy Scouts

Boy Scout Troop 529, sponsored by Post #144, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Community Support

We are also proud to support many charitable organizations in our community, including:

  • MDA
  • The Henrico Rescue Squad
  • Eastern Henrico FISH
  • The War Memorial Foundation
  • The Boy Scouts of America
  • Several Veterans charities
  • Many others

We are able to do this because of the income from our Bingo game.

Legion Riders

During this past year, we chartered a Legion Riders Chapter—it is growing rapidly and has been very active. We are very proud of the Riders reprsentation of our Post at events all over the state.

Membership

This year we have welcomed over a dozen new members to the Post. Sadly, we have transferred far too many to Post Everlasting. Your Post has provided memorial services for the families of these departed Comrades.

Personal Note

My term as Commander is entering its last couple of months. I thank you for allowing me the privilege of representing your Post at conferences, conventions, and other special events. It has been an honor and pleasure to serve you and our Post.

Thanks to each of you for being a part a Post #144!
